Dr Ismail Amra

Orthodontist

Dr Ismail Amra obtained his Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree through the University of the Witwatersrand in 1988. His achievements as an undergraduate included the C J Dreyer Award (for best results in General Medicine and General Surgery) and the Diastema Award (for best Undergraduate Journal Publication).

After that, Dr Amra worked in private practice in Johannesburg and Durban and moved to Cape Town in 1998 to further his studies at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). In 1999, he completed an MSc (Dent) in Orthodontics, followed in 2004 by completing his speciality MChD in Orthodontics (Cum Laude).

After he qualified, Dr Amra remained associated with UWC as a lecturer and part-time post-graduate consultant in the department of Orthodontics. He was also a visiting part-time consultant in Orthodontics at the Dental Clinic in Kimberley Hospital Complex in the Northern Cape between 2005 and 2016.

He has published articles in The American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics and the South African Dental Journal. Dr Amra has also presented extensively and won the 2004 Hugo Retief Award for Best Oral Presentation at the International Association of Dental Research. He is a member of various organisations, including The South African Society of Orthodontics (SASO), the World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO), the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), the College of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) and the International College of Dentists (ICD). This former Provincial Cricket and National Schools Squash player also enjoys cricket, football, reading and travelling.

Sian Nicholson

Oral Hygienist | Practice Manager

Sian is an Oral Hygienist and Practice Manager at Amra Orthodontics.

She obtained her degree (BOH) in Oral Hygiene at the University of the Western Cape in 2003.

Since then, Sian has been an active member of the Oral Hygiene Association of South Africa and is registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

Her passion for education led her to South Korea from 2003 until 2004, where she worked as a teacher at the SDA missionary institute.

In 2005 Sian was permanently employed by Dr Amra and strived to improve her skills by attending Dental Hygiene conferences for continuous professional development.

Apart from managing medical aid and patient accounts queries, she also assists with orthodontic quotations and procedures, including record taking, education on diet, hygiene and retainer maintenance, preparation for band-ups, adjusting wires and elastics, bracket and wire repairs and removal of braces.

Sian believes that keeping teeth healthy is essential and is proud to be part of the process of improving the smile and self-confidence of patients. What makes this more rewarding is working with and being part of a hardworking and supportive team.

Stacey Frey

Oral Hygienist

"Braces changed and saved my life! I feel privileged to have a part in doing the same for others."

Stacey has had a particular interest in orthodontics since a very young age. She qualified with a Diploma in Oral Health from the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in 2007.

She joined Dr Amra's orthodontic practice in December that year and has played a quiet yet positive role ever since.

Stacey is a member of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and the Oral Hygienists Association of South Africa (OHASA). She enjoys the opportunities to meet with colleagues and friends for regular continued professional development seminars & events.

She also completed an Extended Expanded Functions course in Oral Hygiene at UWC in April 2017. Her extended family (colleagues & patients) have a unique place in her life

Qualifications / Associations:

Taryn Brookes

Dental assistant

Taryn has qualified from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 2010 with a certificate in Dental Assisting.

She is registered with the Health Professions Council and stays current with continuing dental education by being an active member on OHASA and reading dental journals.

Taryn joined Amra Orthodontics in December 2010; she is experienced & well trained in many positions throughout the practice; and loves to continue learning and growing in the field. In addition, she enjoys spending her workday helping patients achieve a smile they love!

Elmadee Fick

Dental Assistant

Elmadee Fick is a dental assistant at Amra Orthodontics, and she qualified under the grandfather clause in 2009.

She has completed a home-based care course while working at Amra Orthodontics. Through the support and motivation she received from her beloved colleagues, she received a certificate for the overall achiever for the intake class of June 2018.

She started this amazing journey with Amra Orthodontics on the 18th of June 2007, and since then, she has grown personally, professionally, mentally, and emotionally.

"I didn't choose Amra Orthodontics. It chose me, and 14 years later, I'm still working and growing with the practice. "

The most gratifying and rewarding feeling is when you see how a beautiful bright smile changes a patient from being that shy, insecure person to being so bubbly and confident.
