Essentially, orthodontics entails the management of tooth movement. Dentofacial orthopaedics involves the guidance of facial growth and development, which generally happens during childhood.

Appliances are frequently used in these treatments. The standard braces for orthodontics - and other specialised appliances like headgear, facebows and expanders - depends on what facial abnormalities are present. Sometimes orthopaedic treatment may precede conventional braces, but often the two are used simultaneously.
